🧪 STEM Activity: Balancing an M&M
Developing balance, canter of mass, and fine motor skills.

🔍 Objective:

Challenge kids to balance an M&M on different objects, learning about center of gravity and balance.

📦 Materials:

  • M&Ms (or any small round candy)

  • Plastic or wooden spoon

  • Popsicle sticks

  • Paper cups

  • Playdough or modeling clay (to stabilize objects)

  • Optional: ruler, string, or small blocks for creative balancing setups

🔧 Instructions:

  1. Stabilize a spoon using playdough so it’s horizontal like a seesaw.

  2. Place an M&M on the spoon's center and observe how easily it balances.

  3. Now try different placements: on the edge of the spoon, on stacked popsicle sticks, or on a narrow paper cup rim.

  4. Ask the child to design their own balance structure using the materials.

  5. Add a challenge: How high can you balance an M&M? How many M&Ms can you balance?

🔢 STEM Activity: Beaded Number Rods
Great for early math skills like counting, comparing, and patterns.
